Eugene’s family continued to try to socialize her into femininity as she aged, but eventually her mother came to accept her as she was.

Growing up sometimes we would have to go to church and I would have to . . . I was forced to wear dresses then or for picture day . . . . I would just cry or plead with my grandma or mom about it, but then as I got older and living with my mom more, my mom just kind of tolerated not wanting to wear dresses.

The one male in this genderqueer sample did not begin to break gender norms consciously until adolescence and still chooses to hide part of himself from his family. While he believes they will not mind when they found out he is genderqueer, he clearly feels the need for secrecy about his decision to wear makeup. Cary Van Pelt told us:

I’ve kept my profile on Facebook to be that photo of me with makeup on (at Halloween), because that is the only way I can have a profile photo of me kinda dressed how I want to be but also have an explanation for it. . . . I’ll probably keep that one until Halloween at which I would probably have another one with me. . . . I’m not totally ready for my family and parents to see, although they’ll be cool. But I’m not totally ready for them to see that aspect of me.
